Last week we covered some of the basic online promotional efforts you should be taking a look at.
This weeks topic is about Offline promotion. As with all of the posts so far in the DIY Musicians Guide, this will be a top level look at some fundamental ways to increase your exposure.
Flyers and Hand Outs
First up is the most old school method we know of, hanging flyers.
We put together this video long ago on how to put up flyers for your show, check it out.
While the internet has made promoting shows much easier, not everyone is on the internet all day.
People still frequent coffee shops, sidewalks, and many other places where you could be slapping flyers for your show.
We always try to print 11 x 17 inch flyers, in color. These are huge and stand out great against all the other flyers up on the walls around town.
Something else we’ve seen that work are hand outs. Different people will recommend different sizes, but we recommend the business card size.
Business cards are easy to carry around in your pocket, and more importantly, easy for someone else to slide into their own pocket.
All we do is print up a small version of our main flyer, and add some other custom information on the back side. Usually a link back to this site or somewhere to get more information about the show.
Printed Press
It’s certainly getting harder to come by, but some magazines and news papers still print physical copies and spread those around.
I pick up a new Creative Loafing here in Atlanta about once a week and cruise through it looking for new music and shows.
Reach out to your local news paper and see where they pull their information from, and try to get on that list.
You and every other band is going to be contacting these people, so you might have to follow up several times before anyone notices you. Stay persistent and make it really easy for the people you are contacting to get all the information they need from you.
Word Of Mouth / Street Team
First, I just want to remind you that YOU ARE YOUR STREET TEAM. You and each member of your group are the first members of your street team and should be advocating and evangelizing your brand/band everywhere you go.
If you are not doing this, what makes you think someone else is going to want to join in and help out?
Word of mouth is probably still the most powerful, highest converting way to get people to do anything. It’s not a digital text message, email, event posting, or anything that can be looked over. It’s a real voice from a real person talking about something REAL that is going to be happening.
A great way to spread the word is by attending other shows. Go to shows, meet people, pass out your hand outs, and TALK to folks. Shake some hands, make that personal connection.
These relationships you build will be strong and help you grow your team and your fan base.
Once you have people supporting you, ask them to join up your street team and the willing parties will jump on the chance to help you out.
Radio…It’s Not Dead Yet
It kind of seems like a big joke to get radio play these days. Almost every station is owned by some corporate board heads and investors that could care less about what is getting played, as long as their ad money comes in.
The tiny hint of light at the end of the tunnel is the still thriving college radio circuit.
This too has been taken over and privatized in most areas, but they at least are not at the whim of the corporate giants.
They’ll listen, they’ll play locals, and you can get radio play.
Reach out to your local college first and talk to the music director. Find out what policies they have for playing local music, and follow the steps.
Stay in touch with these people, it might not happen right away, but in time you’ll break through and get that air play.
Do the same thing for colleges around the country and you could start seeing fan base growth quickly.
The Take Away
Flyers, hand outs, and word of mouth go ‘hand in hand’. Go physically talk to people, strike up a conversation, make the connection, then hand them your flyer.
Work on building your street team for more word of mouth. Don’t forget you are your first street team members.
Radio may as well be dead, but it’s still powerful enough to spread your music to many people quickly. Check the college circuit.
We’ll be covering some more outside of the box methods for offline promotion in the future so stay tuned.
